More cockroaches after using gel bait: why it is normal

Why You're Seeing More Cockroaches After Using Gel Bait (and Why That's Normal)

You applied cockroach gel, and a day or two later you're seeing more cockroaches, sometimes even during the day. It's natural to think the gel isn't working. In most cases, the opposite is true. Here's why you see more cockroaches after using gel bait, and what to do.

Reason 1: The bait draws them out

Gel bait is a highly attractive food. Cockroaches that normally stay deep inside walls and cabinets come out to feed on it. You are now seeing cockroaches that were always there but hidden.

Reason 2: Affected cockroaches behave differently

After eating the bait, cockroaches can become slow and disoriented. Instead of hiding, they wander into open areas, which is why you might find them on floors and walls in daylight.

Reason 3: You're seeing the true size of the problem

For every cockroach you normally see, many more are hidden. A short-term increase shows you how large the population really was, and that the bait is reaching it.

How long does this phase last?

Typically a few days. After that, activity should steadily drop. Our week-by-week timeline shows what to expect.

What to do during this phase

  • Don't spray. Spraying contaminates the bait and pushes cockroaches back into hiding before they feed
  • Don't remove the bait or clean the bait spots
  • Check and top up any spots where the gel has been eaten
  • Sweep up dead cockroaches with a dustpan or vacuum, wearing gloves
  • Keep food sealed so the bait stays their main food source

When it might be a real problem

If activity is still increasing after two weeks, check these:

  • Bait placement: is it in the right spots? See where to apply cockroach gel
  • Spraying: has anyone sprayed near the bait?
  • Too little bait: heavy infestations need more spots
  • Constant reinfestation: cockroaches arriving from drains or neighbours. See cockroaches from drains

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to see more cockroaches after using gel?

Yes. Bait draws hidden cockroaches out to feed, and affected cockroaches wander into the open. It usually lasts a few days.

Why are cockroaches coming out during the day after gel?

Cockroaches that have eaten bait become disoriented and stop hiding. It's a sign the bait is working.

Should I spray the cockroaches I see?

No. Spray contaminates the bait. Let them feed, and sweep up dead ones.

When should I worry?

If activity is still rising after two weeks, check bait placement, spraying and possible reinfestation from drains or neighbours.
