Cockroaches coming from bathroom drains in UAE apartments

Cockroaches Coming Up From Drains in UAE Apartments: Causes and Fixes

Few things are worse than a large cockroach crawling out of the shower drain at night. In UAE apartment buildings, cockroaches coming from drains is one of the most common complaints. The good news is that the fixes are simple once you understand where they come from.

Which cockroaches come from drains?

Drain cockroaches are usually American cockroaches: large (around 3 to 4 cm), reddish-brown and able to fly short distances. They live in sewer lines, drainage pipes and building service shafts, where it is warm, dark and damp.

Why they come up through your drains

  • Dry drain traps: every drain has a U-shaped water trap that blocks sewer gases and insects. If a drain isn't used for a while, the water evaporates fast in UAE heat and the barrier disappears.
  • Open floor drains: bathroom and balcony floor drains often have loose or missing covers.
  • Gaps around pipes: spaces where pipes enter walls give access from shafts.
  • Building-wide populations: if the building's drainage has cockroaches, they will explore every route into flats.
  • Hot weather: activity increases in summer. See why cockroaches get worse in UAE summer.

How to stop cockroaches coming from drains

1. Keep drain traps full

Run water in every drain, including guest bathrooms and balcony drains, every few days. This refills the water barrier.

2. Cover floor drains at night

Use a fitted drain cover, a mesh drain guard or a drain cover with a flap. Close shower drains at night if they have a stopper.

3. Seal gaps around pipes

Use silicone sealant around pipes under sinks, behind the toilet and in utility areas.

4. Place gel bait near entry points

Place small dots of Advion Cockroach Gel Bait in cracks near drains, behind the toilet base, under the sink and where pipes enter walls. Do not put gel inside the drain itself, where water will wash it away. Follow our Advion guide.

5. Keep bathrooms dry

Use the exhaust fan, squeegee the shower floor and fix leaks. Damp areas attract cockroaches.

6. Tell building management

If several flats are affected, ask building management to treat the drainage system and service shafts. Your own measures will then work much better.

Why boiling water and bleach don't solve it

Pouring boiling water or bleach down drains may kill a few cockroaches inside the trap, but it doesn't reach those living in the building's pipes. It can also damage some pipes. Covering drains and keeping traps full is far more effective.

Frequently asked questions

Why are cockroaches coming out of my bathroom drain?

Usually because the drain's water trap has dried out or the floor drain is uncovered, giving cockroaches from the building's pipes an easy way in.

How do I block cockroaches from coming up the drain?

Keep the trap filled with water, use a fitted drain cover at night and seal gaps around pipes.

Can I put cockroach gel inside the drain?

No. Water washes it away. Place gel in cracks near the drain, behind the toilet and around pipes instead.

Are drain cockroaches dangerous?

Cockroaches from sewers can carry bacteria onto surfaces, so it's worth stopping them and cleaning areas they walk on.
